Common challenges and outlook for critical infrastructure protection (CIP)
Organizations with elements of the nation’s critical infrastructure face the unique challenge of playing a part in homeland security and protecting themselves against terrorist attacks. The Homeland Security Presidential Directive-7 (HSPD-7) established a national policy for Federal departments and agencies to identify and prioritize critical infrastructure to protect those assets from terrorist attack. One of the first steps taken in reaction to HSPD-7, specific to cyber assets, was the release of the NERC CIP 002-009 standards to protect the SCADA systems for energy companies. As this focus continues to expand, we expect an increase in the regulations and standards for other critical infrastructure protection.
